SKATE ASIA 2010 WEBSITE NOW ONLINE

Finally, the website is online at www.skateasia2010.com.cn but warning. Some of the information still needs correction. The competition rules and hotel information is correct. The Jackson/Ultima Trophy announcement is changed from being for Freestyle 10 skaters to be the major Team Trophy. Hope all of you will plan to join us in August for this big event.

OPENING DAY FOR WORLD ICE ARENA

On April 22nd, the new MIXC mall will open and people will see the new ice rink for the first time. It will NOT open to the public at that time because the MIXC has commissioned David Liu and Darren Olivero to produce a huge professional ice show that will run from May 1st to 5th. As there will be additional seating galleria build on top of the ice at one end and 2 rows on either side, the Olympic size ice surface will become smaller and not able to facilitie a public skating session. On the other end, there will be 10 meters of ice staging setup with water pools and large video screens. The public from April 22nd to May 1st can watch the large group of international skater practice all day everyday. After the show closes from May 6 to 9, they will remove all of the ice show things so we can open to the public on May 10th. We will limit crowd sizes for a period of time as not to overwhelm our new staff and also help control potential skating accidents which always occur when a new rink opens.

A LITTLE HANGZHOU HISTORY

Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province, is at the southern end of the Grand Canal and one of China's seven ancient national capitals. When Marco Polo came to Hangzhou in the 13th century he declared that "it is the most beautiful and elegant city in the world". There is a popular saying: "Above there is heaven, below there are Hangzhou and Suzhou." Hangzhou's "heavenly" beauty attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists to its exquisite West Lake (Xi Hu) area each year to enjoy the placid lake, beautiful gardens, reflecting pools, lavish temples and friendly lakeside teahouses. First built over 2,200 years ago, Hangzhou is one of the cradles of China's civilization. Hangzhou used to the capital of Wu and Yue States in the 10th century during the Five Dynasties period. The city began to prosper and flourish in the Tang Dynasty. The city had its political heyday in the Southern Song Dynasty when it served as the capital. Hangzhou witnessed rapid commercial boom in the Ming and Qing Dynasty. In and around Hangzhou, tourists find the well-known West Lake which is surrounded by forested mountains and many more historical sites. Hangzhou is also well-known for silk and tea. A trip to Hangzhou is easily combined with a visit to a tea plantation in the hills near the West Lake.

Hangzhou is a large modern city that is surprisingly affordable for visitors. Hotels are reasonably priced, transportation is good and getting better, food is unsurpassed and visitors to Skate Asia 2010 will find the new MIXC mall one the finest luxury facilities in the world.

INTERPRETIVE (Freestyle Levels Only)
Freestyle level skaters will hear a piece of music once off the ice; twice during the group warm-up; and once more before competing while they mentally choreograph a skating routine – with no help from friends, parents or coaches. The emphasis is on the skater’s ability to choreograph an entertaining skating routine to music and not on the difficulty of the skating maneuvers performed.
For most national events, we will use a two-panel (A/B) format. Skaters will wear colored numbers during this event for easy identification by the Judges. There will be 2 skaters competing simultaneously on full ice. Those 2 skaters will not be competing against each other in the same group. One skater will be from Panel A and one from Panel B.
Forward spirals are allowed at all levels, but NO BACKWARD SPIRALS are allowed in this event at any level for the safety of all competitors.

KALEIDOSKATE (All Levels)
A group of 8 or more skaters perform a fun and entertaining group number. Minimal skating skills are required for this event. Each skater represents a speck of color – and those color pieces are choreographed to create constantly changing patterns, designs and formations on the ice. Creativity, use of color and props are also an important part of the overall “design”.
PAIR 1-10
Together two skaters perform a choreographed routine to music. This program should include all the required maneuvers from their current Pair test level. The event is similar to Couples. However, unlike Couples, Pairs includes pair lifts and pair spins. Both skaters must pass the required Pair Test to compete in this event.
PATTERN SKATING (Delta level and above)
This unique form of group skating is done by at least 4 people. Working off a common circle, skaters "draw" patterns, formations, and designs on the ice to music. The skaters skate in unison, all doing the same thing at the same time, each in their own area of the pattern. All kinds of maneuvers can be performed i.e. jumps / spins / footwork / spirals / etc. as long as the circular symmetry is predominantly evident throughout the routine.
PRE ALPHA – DELTA SOLO
Skater performs a one-minute program routine to music that emphasizes the required test level maneuvers from Pre-Alpha through Delta. Depending on each test level requirement, specific skating skills must be performed. All skaters must pass the Pre-Alpha – Delta test to compete in this event. Skaters must include one maneuver from Freestyle 1 in their program.
PRODUCTION TEAM (All Levels)
This team event is for groups of 8 or more skaters. Team will be judged on the performance value of the program. There are no required maneuvers and no technical score for this event. The group should use music along with elaborate costumes and props to enhance the theme while creating an entertaining performance. Skaters from all levels can participate in this event. Event entries will be divided in to Small / Medium / Large / Extravaganza categories.
RHYTHMIC SKATING – FEATURED EVENT FOR 2000!
Special Discounted Entry Fee for Rhythmic events at all 2009 national events !
This new entertaining event requires the use of one hand-held prop listed below. The program should contain elements that employ the use of the prop throughout the routine. The skater must maintain control of the prop at all times.
Props of the same kind (i.e. Ball / Hoop / Ribbon) must be grouped together and cannot be combined for competition event groups.
The same rules and limitations apply as for Spotlight solo events. Props are not allowed on the event Warm-Up. If it is obvious that skater’s prop does not meet the following specifications, the panel Referee can determine if any point deduction should be taken.
Choice of One:
1. Hoop - Must be made from wood or plastic (from a rigid, non-bending material). The hoop diameter should measure between 2 feet 7 inches - 2 feet 11 inches.
2. Ball - Must be made of rubber or plastic. The ball diameter should measure approximately 7-3/4 inches.
3. Ribbon - Stick must be made of wood, plastic or fiberglass. Stick length should be between 20-30 inches. Ribbon material should be one single piece of satin or a non-starched fabric. Ribbon width should be 2-4 inches wide and between 6 feet - 9 feet long.
Rhythmic Program Duration :
FS1-FS3 = 1.0 min.
FS4-FS5 = 1.5 min.
FS6-FS10 = 2.0 min.
*RHYTHMIC SKATING EVENT CLARIFICATION
The new Rhythmic Skating events are for skaters in Freestyle 1-10 levels only. The skater chooses only one rhythmic prop per routine - ball, hoop or ribbon. SOLO SURPRISE (All Levels) – FEATURED EVENT FOR 2009 !
Special Discounted Entry Fee for Solo Surprise events at 2009 national events !
This is a “fun” event where individual skaters are grouped together by age and/or skating levels. The skaters don’t know what they will be asked to do until the event begins. This event usually consists of tasks not necessarily related to skating ability. For higher-level skaters, the task might require performance of some skating skills, but the technical performance of the skating skill is not scored.
SPECIAL SKATER 1-10
This category is open to skaters of all ages with physical or mental disabilities. Skaters will perform a program to music for 1 minute that includes all of the compulsory maneuvers from their test level. Skaters will be grouped by age, gender, and disability classification. The Special Skater event is based on the ISI Special Skater test levels 1-10. These tests must be registered with the ISI national office.
Above the Special Skater 10 (Delta) level, Special Skaters can take and pass the test levels in Freestyle, Figures, Couples, Pairs, Dance and Free Dance so they are eligible to compete in those events. If requested, the Competition Director can put special skaters into a separate event group for those events.
SPOTLIGHT SOLO PROGRAM (All Levels)
This is an entertaining & “fun” routine that emphasizes the skater’s acting ability and not technical skating skills. There is no score for technical merit in this event. The skater must pass a test for Tots, Pre-Alpha to Delta or Freestyle to determine the spotlight event level.
Spotlight events are divided into three categories listed below. Please mark the correct category on your entry form.
a) CHARACTER – a famous or easily identifiable character.
b) DRAMATIC – a theatrical performance that sets a mood and evokes an emotional response.
c) LIGHT ENTERTAINMENT – an entertaining or light-hearted performance

STROKING (Alpha – Delta Only)
Skaters compete together in groups wearing colored numbers for easy identification by the Judges. They do only forward stroking in both directions and are judged on posture and correct stroking technique. Crossovers are optional at the end of the rink, but not required and not judged. This is the very basic skill of skating.
SYNCHRONIZED COMPULSORIES – Formation / Skating
Synchronized Formation and Skating teams must perform 4 or 5 required elements to music, with no additional moves permitted. Teams will be divided by age groups For details of compulsory maneuvers and program duration limitations, please see the current 2008 edition of the ISI Skater’s & Coaches Handbook.
For the new 2009 Rule Revisions click here
SYNCHRONIZED TEAM - Dance / Formation / Skating
This is a group number for 8 or more skaters to perform in unison. They can incorporate various skating formations such as circles, pinwheels, lines, footwork sequences and dance steps. For description of Formation, Skating, and Dance categories, please see current edition of ISI Skaters and Coaches Handbook.
For the new 2009 Rule Revisions click here
TEAM COMPULSORIES 1-10 (Freestyle Levels Only)
Six skaters (or seven skaters for FS6-10 levels) perform a lively and entertaining routine in which each skater performs one required test level maneuver (in the order listed in the Skaters & Coaches Handbook). Lively music with entertaining themes, great costumes and hand-held props are featured in this event. Skaters can compete on more than one team as long as those two teams are in different freestyle levels. Skater may skate above, but not below their own freestyle test level.
TEAM SURPRISE (All Levels) – FEATURED EVENT FOR 2009!
Special Discounted Entry Fee for Team Surprise events at 2009 national events!
This is a new “team” version of Surprise events. Each team must have 4 skaters from the same category level (listed below). Each skater may only participate on one team. Skaters under 6 years are not permitted to compete in Team Surprise events. Teams can be made up of all males, all females, or any combination – as long as the resulting test level category is the same for ALL TEAM MEMBERS . Entries will be divided into competition groups based on the average age and/or test levels of all 4 team members .
Category Levels:
Low
All team skaters must be in Pre-Alpha – Delta levels only.
Medium
All team members FS1-3 / Bronze and below
Intermediate
All team members FS4-5 / Silver and below
High
All team members FS6-10 / Gold / Platinum and below
Skaters may skate in a higher team category than their current test level – but not in a lower team category. If entries are received with a team of skaters from different category levels, the team will be entered into the level of the highest skater.
These team “surprises” will be a relay-type event where every member of the team must complete a required task. Some events might be related to skating ability – and some may not – SO GRAB YOUR FRIENDS AND JOIN THIS EXCITING NEW TEAM EVENT ! ! !
THEMED COUPLES SPOTLIGHT / THEMED PRODUCTION / THEMED SOLO SPOTLIGHT (All Levels)
These events will use the same guidelines as for regular Couples Spotlight, Production teams & Solo Spotlight events regarding levels, maneuver limitations, duration, and costume/prop restrictions. All programs in this event category must be related to this national event theme for 2009.
In honor of our ISI 50 th Anniversary celebration, the theme for 2009 national events is: “The Fabulous 50’s” – so pull-out your poodle skirts and leather jackets – and get ready to be-bop your way to the top … on ice!
TOT 1-4
Tots (skaters age 6 and under) will perform a 1-minute program routine with music. They should only perform the required maneuvers from their test level. Additional maneuvers should not be included and will not be judged. 2-foot and/or 1-foot snowplow stops are permitted in Tot events. All Tot competitors must have their test registered with ISI to enter Tot competition events. Coaches will be allowed to help the skater from the ice door but will not be permitted on the ice during the national competition events.

2010 ISI TEST & COMPETITION REVISIONS

The following 2010 Test & Competition Revisions are optional for ISI competitions after September 1, 2009 and mandatory for all events after January 1, 2010. Competition Directors should inform all participants and judges if they will follow these new revisions for events from September 1 – December 31, 2009.

1. Competition Event Revisions & Clarifications:

• Couples Spotlight Medium Duration for Freestyle 1-3 / Open Bronze is increased to 1:30

• Rhythmic Skating Duration (Ball, Hoop & Ribbon) for Freestyle 1-3 is increased to 1:30

• Uncaptured Spins – The back sit spin and back camel spin can be performed on either edge.

• Synchronized Formation Shoulder Hold position requires that both shoulders be held.

• Against the Book judging – Skaters will receive either 1st Place or 2nd Place. It is no longer possible to get 3rd Place against the book. The judging panel should discuss and agree on the placement, whenever possible.

The skater must still receive 80% of the total possible points for 1st Place. If the skater receives an average total of 79.9% or below, they will receive 2nd Place.

For events with technical criteria, the skater should get 1st Place if the required maneuvers are completed to the passing test standard for their age and ability level.

2. Ice Dancing Test Levels have been revised as follows:

Ice Dancing Tests 1-4: No changes
Ice Dancing Test 5: Hickory Hoedown, Willow Waltz, Ten Fox
Ice Dancing Test 6: 14-Step, European Waltz, Foxtrot
Ice Dancing Test 7: American Waltz, Tango, Rocker Foxtrot
Ice Dancing Test 8: Kilian, Blues
Ice Dancing Test 9: Paso Doble, Starlight Waltz, Quickstep
Ice Dancing Test 10: Westminster Waltz, Argentine Tango, Viennese Waltz

3. Special Skater Test requirements have been revised as follows:

Special Skater tests 3, 5, 7 and 9 have a stop requirement for these levels. Skaters can do any stop at any level – 2-foot or 1-foot snowplow; Left or Right T-stop; or hockey stop.

Special Skater Test 9: The Mohawk requirement is for one forward to backward Mohawk on either foot or edge. This requirement is not the same as the 7-step Mohawk combination in the Gamma test.

4. Test Scoring Clarification and National Test Registration – All ISI tests may be scored using the numerical scale of 5-10 for a passing score on each requirement or may be scored as Pass/Retry. Each test requirement must be performed to the passing test standard described in the Skaters and Coaches handbook in order to officially pass the test. The Test Registration spreadsheet (available from ISI) will accept either method of scoring the tests.

QUESTIONS ABOUT SKATE ASIA 2010

If you have any questions about Skate Asia 2010, please write me at tedhangzhou@gmail.com (for event or venue questions) or to Paul Wong at paulwong@swireproperties.com (for competition questions). The website for Skate Asia is being put together now and hopefully will be online before too long.

The official hotel which is nearest to the rink (300 meters) is the Tian Yuan Tower Hotel. A five star property with very very low rates (seriously). The hotel has been open only 2 years, has a large indoor swimming pool and is next door to an ultra modern sports facility.

The famous West Lake area is just 20 min by taxi from the mall or the hotel (assuming good traffic conditions).

Hangzhou is located just 70 min by bullet train to Shanghai and we encourage you to go there for the Expo 2010, a gigantic world's fair running from May to October 2010. Its a once in a lifetime experience with more than 160 national pavillions. Its the largest world's fair ever held and is a must see.

Fly to Hangzhou direct from all major Chinese cities, but also direct from Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, and with connections via those cities from other parts of Asia.

We hope to have http://www.skateasia2010.com/ online sometime by November, so keep watch.

NEW AWARDS FROM ISIASIA

At Skate Asia 2010, the Ice Skating Institute of Asia will present for the first time several awards that will come annually thereafter. One is for the rink whose participation in ISI Testing and submission of competitors is the most outstanding. Another award will recognize the coach who submits the most skaters into ISIAsia competitions. Other awards will be named at a later date but all are important because it is our first recognitions of the top members of our organization. Yes, there will be some awards for skaters as well.

LETS KEEP SKATE ASIA ALIVE

Some of you skaters and coaches might wonder why we didn't do an event in 2009. Just like the year of SARS, we chose not to stage the event in 2009 primarily because of 2 factors. One was the world financial crisis which forced people to cut back on unnecessary spending and the other was the H1N1 virus. There is yet another reason why staging this event is difficult each year and it's the cost. Skate Asia is an enormous undertaking that usually takes 18 months to prepare. The planning and expense is overwhelming for most of the rinks in Asia and this is why its been held in Hong Kong twice, Kuala Lumpur twice and in Taipei and Manila as well as Shenzhen.

In order to make this event more affordable for rink operators, we are looking for ways to produce a quality event at a lower cost so that you will have a place to compete each summer.

Our effort in Hangzhou is our opportunity to produce a great event without all the extravagant trimmings. The quality of the event will not be compromised. The quality of the medals will be as good if not better. The transportation will be just as good. So, please join in Skate Asia 2010 and support our efforts to give you a great event.

Around the famous West Lake area which is 20 min by taxi, there are numerous hotels that have a very wide variety of prices from about USD50 per night to $300. I might recommend a 3 star hotel called Lakeview Hotel, which is about USD$60 per night, right on the lack and next to the main street that leads directly to our mall. The Lakeivew hotel has a buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner daily in their top floor restaurant that overlooks the beautiful lake. Highly recommend that you visit the lake area early in the morning to watch the groups doing Tai Chi.

FOOD AND RESTAURANTS

Well this is a subject everyone will be interested in. Hangzhou has just about everything from KFC, MacDonalds to local and Shanghainese, Cantonese, Szechuan and northern Chinese cuisines. For western food, there are Pizza Hut, Steak King and wonderful buffet's located at the Landison and the ShangriLa as well as the Hyatt Regency hotels. In the MIXC mall there will be more than 40 F&B outlets from fast food to grand (and expensive) restaurants including two located on the roof next to a real flowing river....yes, I said river. Our mall has a river on the roof complete with bridges to cross over if you want food from the other side. Look at the first photo on this blog and you'll see it.

HOSPITALS AND DOCTORS

We are very pleased to say that Hangzhou's most modern hospital is located just 3 blocks from the shopping mall in the event anyone needs medical attention. The Sir Run Run Shaw hospital is the largest and newest medical facility in Hangzhou but numerous other speciality hospitals connected with the Zhiezhang University are also not far away.

HANGZHOU SHOPPING

VIEW: LOOKING AT PUDONG AND PEARL TOWER IN SHANGHAI FROM THE BUND.
Well, by virtue of the fact that our rink is in the MIXC, by far the most modern and luxurious shopping mall in all of China, its safe to say you'll be surrounded by a million square meters of the best shopping in the country. If you're into souvineers then there are numerous places to find those as well. Hangzhou is particularly famous for silk and tea and there is a silk market which is a "must see".

Want and adventure for the day? Hop on one of the "D" trains to Shanghai. Ticket costs around USD$8 one way. The trains are luxury class and take only 70 minutes to get to that great city. There are train ticket shops located around the city and one is very close to the MIXC mall. On arrival in Shanghai, you can take the subway all the way to Peoples Square which is the main area for visitors and famous Nanjing Road a pedestrian street. It begins at the New World Emporium (which has a tiny ice rink on the 6th floor), and goes all the way to the Bund, that famous mile long walk next to the Huangpu River, overlooking the massive skyscrapers in Pudong. Want and adventure, cross the river and visit the Pearl Tower and the shopping malls nearby. The Super Brands Mall has another small ice rink on the 8th floor. The YuYan Gardens is a must see with its traditional Chinese buildings, Koi ponds and gift shops.

For another once in a lifetime adventure, take the subway over to the Maglev station and buy a round trip ticket to the Pudong Interntional Airport. The Maglev train is the only one of its kind in the world and moves by magnetic levitation at 450kph. The trip takes only 7 minutes.

And guess what, they are building a maglev train from Shanghai to Hangzhou cutting the travel time to less than 30 min from one city to another.

GETTING AROUND IN HANGZHOU

Hangzhou has a new subway line in progress but it will not be ready in time for Skate Asia, so your choices are taxi and public buses. We will run a private bus service between the mall and several of our official hotels during Skate Asia. One interesting thing you will notice quickly is the multitude of rental bike locations. These are primarily for locals to use to get to work, but I think it might be possible for our skaters to rent them as well. The price is incredibly cheap, about Rmb 1 for the first hour.

GETTING TO HANGZHOU

Flying into Hangzhou directly is possible from some international cities. Direct flights on Air Asia from Kuala Lumpur daily, Korean Airlines from Seoul, Dragonair from Hong Kong but if you want to save money, we suggest you book an airline from Shenzhen Airport and all of the airlines who serve Hangzhou are good. They include Shenzhen Airlines, China Southern, China Eastern and several others. Ticket prices are a great deal cheaper than flying directly from Hong Kong. On arrival, the taxi into town is about Rmb.80 or around USD$10 and takes about 35 minutes.

Photos taken by Ted Wilson around the famous Westlake in Hangzhou. You will always be pleasantly surprised by the scenery, restaurants, art museums, hotels and most of all, the abundance of tourists strolling along the avenues that surround the lake. The cleanliness, flowers and police make this a safe place both day and night. The lake itself is enormous and boat rides are cheap and a relaxing way to enjoy afternoon tea while cruising around the sights. Summer months in Hangzhou tend to be warm, so no need for a jacket in August. From the lake to the ice rink is 20 min by taxi or bicycle. There are free and very low cost bike rentals all around the lake but also around the city and dedicated bike paths on every street.
